Community Engagement

Community engagement and development has been one of my interests for a long time. I believe that my community allowed me to be educated and did not suck me into the other ills of society. Bear in mind, I live and grew up in Mitchells Plain- an area synonymous with drug and alcohol abuse, teenage pregnancy, gangsterism and various other social ills. These problems are obviously linked to various social issues such as poverty, unemployment, low literacy rates and many others.

Whilst I know  I cannot find a cure for all the community's problems, but I did know that I had skills that I could offer to ensure assist with the alleviation of some of the problems. Hence, my aim is to use sport as a tool to address social issues. As a result of this, I joined Strandfontein Mets Softball Club and this gave me a platform to reach a broader spectrum of the community.
With the club, we are engaging in youth development within the community.

In addition to this, I allow my students to run programmes in communities that uses sport and recreation to address social issues. To date, they have run workshops and events on nutrition, drug awareness, anti-social behaviours, diversity and active engagement in schools.
